Eco Living Citric Acid is a highly versatile, natural, and plastic-free cleaning powerhouse. Because it is an acidic cleaner, it is exceptionally effective at breaking down mineral deposits like limescale and rust, making it an excellent eco-friendly alternative to harsh chemical descalers.

Common Uses & How to Apply

Because it comes in powder form, you can create custom-strength solutions for various jobs around your home:

  • Descaling Kettles & Coffee Machines: Dissolve 1–2 tablespoons of citric acid in 1 litre of cold water. Pour into the appliance, allow it to sit, then boil (if it's a kettle) or run a cycle (for coffee machines). Always rinse thoroughly with fresh water afterward.

  • Washing Machine/Dishwasher Deep Clean: Add 6–8 tablespoons directly into an empty drum and run a hot cycle (90°C) to remove limescale and build-up.

  • Toilet Bowl Cleaner: Pour a generous amount (approx. half the bag for a deep clean) into the bowl and leave it overnight. Brush and flush in the morning.

  • Bathroom & Kitchen Surfaces: Mix 1–2 tablespoons with 500ml of warm water in a spray bottle. Use it to wipe down taps, showerheads, and sinks to remove hard water marks.

Essential Safety & Usage Tips

  • Avoid Natural Stone: Never use citric acid on marble, granite, or other porous natural stone, as the acid can etch, dull, or permanently damage these surfaces.

  • Test First: Always test on a small, inconspicuous area if you are unsure about a surface finish, particularly on plated or colored fixtures.

  • Never Mix with Bleach: Crucial Safety Rule: Never mix citric acid with chlorine-based bleach, as this can create harmful, toxic gases.

  • Surface Sensitivity: While great for limescale, it is not a degreaser. For greasy surfaces (like oven hobs), alkaline products like soda crystals or bicarbonate of soda are more effective.

  • Protective Wear: Though it is a natural food-grade acid, it can still irritate the eyes or skin. Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin and store it in a cool, dry place out of reach of children.

Eco-Friendly Benefits:

  • Plastic-Free: The packaging is typically home-compostable and plastic-free.

  • Sustainable: It is vegan, plant-derived, and biodegradable, making it a safe choice for septic tanks and the environment.
